It's a pub quiz classic: where would you find the two closest professional football grounds in the UK?
If, like me, your childhood consisted of long periods of poring over a Rothman’s Football Yearbook in search of trivia about the beautiful game, you’ll know immediately that the answer is Dundee.
In fact, for a long time the only thing I knew about Scotland's fourth-largest city was that Dundee and Dundee United’s grounds were just 250 yards apart.
However, that’s all about to change over the next few years, as Dundee is well and truly a destination on the rise.
From 2018 you’ll be able to visit the V&A Museum of Design Dundee (pictured) – the first ever design museum to be built in the UK outside London. It’s part of the £1 billion redevelopment of the city’s waterfront, which will see new hotels and businesses and the creation of 7,000 jobs.
The development is set to put Dundee back on the map – and conferences will play a key role in that.
Events agency Starkevents organised the Congress for the International Society of Addiction Medicine ISAM2015 in Dundee, winning the Scottish Event Awards Best Conference award in 2016 as a result.
Starkevents owner Ann Stark said: “The success of ISAM Dundee 2015 was hugely helped by VisitScotland Bid funding and the proactive and collaborative approach of the Dundee and Angus Convention Bureau.
“In Scotland and beyond Dundee is a new kid on the conference block but its potential is huge. Dundee shouldn’t compete directly with the big city destinations it’s a complimentary offering – if your event is looking for a smaller compact destination with masses of culture and history on the doorstep - and not forgetting St Andrews just minutes away - it’s a fantastic choice.”
All of which is why we'll be taking a closer look at the meetings and events options on offer in the next issue of M&IT. Watch out for the Itinerary Dundee feature in the January issue.
