Take it outside

I was delighted to attend the MIMAs & EVCOM Industry Awards at the Park Plaza Riverside last Friday: it did, as most award ceremonies do, start with a glass of champagne and a lot of mingling amongst the great and the good. It went on, as they do, to speeches, live music, more speeches, awards, photos, drinks and dancing. What’s not to like? Well, it would be nice, occasionally, to be outside. Obviously last week’s event, held in November, would not work - but it would be quite nice, come summer months, to be in an open air setting.

As Brits, our conversation is dominated by the weather; summer is no different, in fact it’s worse. In winter we recede into our warm coats and centrally-heated offices, resigned to our cold and predominantly rainy existence. Summer, on the other hand, is a season of unpredictability - no month can guarantee sunshine. But it’s not too cold and we have some stunning venues with outdoor grounds.

It would be quite nice to network in daylight, everyone loves a garden party and everyone loves fireworks. Last summer I attended an awards lunch in one of London’s landmark hotels. It was great, but it was also one of the hottest days of the year, and the ballroom, while grand, was also windowless and stuffy. As soon as it was over people ran for the door and the cleansing rays of sunshine.

Logistics may be tricky, but then that’s what this industry is good at - making difficult events work, and work well.
