Value is added – but dinner is taken away!

Understandably, event industry suppliers are doing their best to grab the attention of buyers with some cut-price offers as the recession starts to bite. The venue managers were first to respond to the downturn in demand with some offers that a year ago would have been real snips, but I’m not sure they have responded fast enough and I’m not sure that the January sale has been attractive enough to get punters really excited.

One offer I have seen has been the Belfry’s January “meet and treat” offer. It says ‘book 9 delegates and the 10th goes free plus a free two hour AquaSpa experience for delegates.’

Not bad – but when all is said and done it’s only a 10 per cent discount with free use of spa although at least there’s a bit of added value in there. One of the more bizarre offers I have seen is the deal from Dolce La Hulpe Brussels which is a 24-hour package for 275 Euros per delegate available until February 28. Doesn’t seem like a great deal to me – that’s nearly 250 quid in Blighty money! But it’s particularly unusual when you read the small print and realise that this particular 24-hour conference package includes no dinner!

So, at a time when organisers are seeking added value, Dolce is offering less. Perhaps they could market it for weight-watchers meetings…
