New framework launched to measure cultural impact of major events

A new framework has been launched to measure the non-economic impact of major events, such as the Olympic Games.

Speaking at the 2010 Legacy Lives conference held in London this week, Liz Nicholl, COO, UK Sport, said: “The event impact framework is a step up from the economic impact study. We’ve been working with partners to better measure the non-economic legacy of events such as sporting and cultural impact. The impact on people can be wide ranging, such as a behavioural change in volunteering. The framework walks you through this thinking.”

Partners in developing the framework include VisitBritain, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, North West Development Agency, Event Scotland, the London Development Agency and Yorkshire Forward.

“We hope this framework will be adopted at a national level,” said Nicholl. “It’s online and free to access for event organisers and funders and provides guidance and resources for both small and large events.”

Nicholl’s company, UK Sport, is responsible for awarding National Lottery funds to bring sporting events to the UK. It hopes to bring 64 major events to the country between now and 2012 and will be asking recipients of support to adhere to the new framework.
