Developers sought for new convention centre in Cardiff

Cardiff County Council is inviting expressions of interest from developers to build, fund and operate a 1,300 delegate capacity convention centre in the city centre. The move follows a number of studies undertaken by the council, which established that Cardiff needed a centre with 5,000sqm of flat floor space for exhibitions and banqueting plus a range of break-out rooms.

Sally Edwards Hart, operational manager for Tourism Development & Visitor Services at Cardiff Council, said: “Cardiff currently offers excellent facilities for up to 620 delegates at City Hall, with flexible space and a good split of breakout rooms.

“Other venues such as St David’s Hall, the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff International Arena and the Millennium Stadium can take very large numbers for plenary sessions. These venues work very well for many types of events, but where a large exhibition is required along with a large plenary session and substantial food service, the split between auditorium seating and flat floor space does not work for all types of event.

“Cardiff Convention Bureau is receiving an increasing number of enquiries and we want to ensure that we have the facilities to fill any gaps in the venues we have available.”

The tender process is likely to start in the spring and go through a Europe-wide procurement process.
