Open spaces take shape in Olympic Park creating ‘new South Bank’

22/12/2011

The Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) has announced the winners of two design competitions to shape the open spaces within the Olympic Park in Stratford.

New York-based James Corner Field Operations was selected to design the 50-acre area between the Olympic Stadium and Aquatic Centre, known as the South Plaza. Its plan includes a tree-lined promenade connecting flexible spaces for events, cultural programmes, food stalls and other attractions. A spokesman for OPLC said the area would become a ‘new South Bank’.

Meanwhile, London-based Erect Architecture has been chosen to create a community hub building which will be integrated into the parkland and river valley of the North Park area.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "The fantastic legacy we are building at the Olympic Park is already taking shape. These inspiring public spaces will be at the centre of the new communities that are rising in this brand new quarter of the capital.”

Many of the venues and outdoor spaces within the Olympic Park will be available for events once the games are over. According to OPLC, they will come online one by one between 2013 and 2014. The organisation intends to start a consultation with the events industry in January (after postponing it from October) to help shape the legacy plans.
