London Marathon conference to focus on female fitness


The 29th London Marathon Medicine Conference will be held in London this Saturday, ahead of the Virgin London Marathon on Sunday.

The conference, taking place 66 Portland Place – home to The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), focuses on the medicine and science of marathon running is aimed at scientists, medics, physiotherapists, and coaches who are also runners themselves.

This year the conference programme is built around the ‘often over-looked’ female athlete. The keynote speaker is Dr Jorunn Sundgot-Borgen PhD, professor in physical activity and health, from the Norwegian University of Sport and Physical Education, Norway who will be talking on eating disorders and exercise in elite female athletes.

A spokesperson for RIBA added: “Other speakers will be examining the incidence of sudden cardiac death in female marathon runners, and the biomechanics of running in females with specific reference to breast biomechanics.”
