Bargains to be had in Athens as suppliers slash rates

27/04/2012

Hoteliers in Athens are slashing their rates in a bid to attract events business back to the city, according to a Greek DMC.

Angela Kipling, MD of Athens-based Kipling Events, said venues and other suppliers in the recession-hit destination were offering discounts of between 10-30 per cent. In response, she is writing to all clients to make them aware that there are bargains to be had.

“This week I am writing to all of our existing co-operators to let them know that Athens is offering far friendlier rates than any other European capital, making it a most attractive city for event planners,” she said.
“In the context of restructuring the Greek economy, restrictive trade union practices have been lifted, resulting in much better rates on transportation and other services and we are delighted to pass on the savings to our clients.”

She added: “With friendly rates from city hotels and venues, Athens offers a classical historic city centre, vibrant coastal resorts, Olympic legacy modern infrastructure, accessibility, and is now packaged with amazing value.”

One of the deals highlighted by Kipling as 'outstanding' comes from Hotel Grande Bretagne, a Luxury Collection Hotel. The five-star property, which Kipling says is the best in Athens, is offering a day delegate rate of just €44.50 including room hire, lunch, coffee breaks and Wi-Fi in the meeting rooms. Overnight rates are also reduced, at €170 including breakfast, and one room is offered free of charge for every 20 booked.
