02/05/2012

Given its location, the Cairns Convention Centre is an appropriate location for the 12th International Coral Reef Symposium. But the event is just one of 13 taking place at the Queensland venue over the next six months as the city prepares for a flurry of activity.

More than 8,000 delegates are expected in Cairns between now and October, bringing in welcome business tourism dollars. The venue will also host the 33rd Conference of the International Society for Animal Genetics and a symposium of nuclear astrophysicists.

Ross Steele, general manager, Cairns Convention Centre, said: “The centre’s long term international marketing focus along with the proven success of Cairns as a business events destination are the catalysts for hosting so many prestigious international events.”

Among the other confirmed events is Dioxin 2012, a forum for the study of environmental toxicology. Conference chair professor Jochen Mueller said: “We really wanted to show our global colleagues the great natural environment offered by Australia – and Cairns is the jewel in the crown of Australia’s world heritage environmental attractions.”
