Congrex Sweden files for bankruptcy

Company hopeful part, or all, of business can be rescued

Congrex Sweden, part of Congrex Group, the international event management company, has filed for bankruptcy.

A trustee has been appointed to handle the situation and work is ‘ongoing’ to find a solution. Group marketing and communications director Annika Benson confirmed there was still a chance ‘parts of the business could be taken over by other parties’, but the company's 80 staff had been made redundant.

She said: "Congrex Sweden has experienced weak earnings in recent years and unfortunately this situation has worsened during 2013. The Board and management of Congrex Sweden has worked intensely to find solutions to these problems."

Benson said discussions were taking place with several clients in a bid to ensure events affected by the collapse of the business could still take place. Only one client had taken the decision to scrap their meeting.

Congrex Group, which has an association management wing, has subsidiaries in 13 countries. Its clients include national and international associations, government organisations and corporations.

This year Congrex Sweden organised SOE2013 - the European Society of Ophthalmology,in Copenhagen, Denmark, amongst others. Previous clients include World Water Week, which Congrex Sweden ran from 2010-2012.
