Measurement metrics, changing event formats and revenue models were among the topics discussed at the inaugural MPI Insights Healthcare Roundtable.

MPI members met at the Royal College of Physicians in London to discuss some of the challenges facing planners and suppliers who deliver meetings and events in the healthcare space.

Speakers included Andrew Winterburn of Meetings Inn & Compliant Venues, Iona Courtenay-Warren, global programme director – pharma at CWT Meetings & Events; Steve Deacon, senior vice president at ONO Pharma; and Andy Thurston, senior director business development at MD Group.

Winterburn said: “The ground rules of healthcare meetings have changed dramatically. When I started it was 35mm slides, now we have multi-channel communications and different ways of engaging with delegates and the spectrum of people attending.

“We’ve got to start thinking about meetings and how the content is being delivered and how we’re working with clients. We really need to understand that and the journey that healthcare professionals are going on. What does it mean for patient empowerment?

“There are lots of different things happening in the industry, creating new opportunities – and new challenges.”

Members enjoyed a networking drinks reception followed by a three course dinner in the venue’s Council Chamber. Attendees were from a broad range of firms, including: Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Banks Sadler, TFI Group, Zibrant, Barbican, Wellcome Collection and Edwardian Hotels.

Jane Baker, MPI UK & Ireland president, said: “Guests told us they found it refreshing to move on from the debate about compliance to the pharma code and instead tackle more strategic topics such as the need for more detailed event objectives and measurement metrics, the ongoing audience need to hear the latest educational content and share research, plus how changing event formats and revenue models will impact healthcare events in the future.

“We’re delighted with the feedback and look forward to making this roundtable an annual fixture in the MPI UK & Ireland event calendar.”
