Sports Technology Awards unveils shortlist using augmented reality

Awards set a global first for the novel method in unveiling the shortlisted finalists

The Sports Technology Awards (STAs) set a global first when it used augmented reality to unveil its shortlist.

Brands entering the STAs were told to download its AR app and scan their office for a digital icon. By doing this, they could see the shortlist hours before the announcement was made public. Nick Somers, of finalist Return2play, tweeted a photo of his office with the announcement hovering over it: "Found this floating above the office this morning! Thanks #skignz #sportstech".

Awards director, Mark Hunter, explained: “The Sports Technology Awards is a unique celebration of innovation in sports globally, as such, our audience is highly sophisticated so each year we face a challenge of how to impress and engage them in ways they’ve yet to see. We had seen some creative yet practical uses of AR so decided that this should be one of the technologies we embrace this year and the response has been phenomenal.”

Now in its fourth year, the STAs has pushed innovation from entrants and within its own ceremony. The 2016 lunch saw drones deliver the MC’s script and robots direct people to their tables.  

The Sports Technology Awards’ AR solution was by Skignz, a UK company that aims to “make AR useful”. Skignz is also delivering part of awards ceremony so there are plenty more surprises in store.

The Sports Technology Awards ceremony will take place on 4 May at the Roundhouse, London.

    Interesting to hear about use of AR in this way, often using gamification for Augmented Reality is the go to place for this technology in events.

    Would be interested to see how they used the AR in the event and whether the shortlist was hidden around the venue etc or how it was then implemented if a follow up or video demonstration could be a part of a further press announcement?
