London hotels saw rates soar 7.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011, mostly due to the interest generated by the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics and the Paralympics, according to HRS’ latest Hotel Price Radar report.

The report also stated that the average rate of a room per night in the capital was £108.24.

Other UK
cities showed rates as follows – Edinburgh: £88.13; Reading: £78.87; Manchester: £74.68; Bristol: £72.30; Birmingham: £70.82; Liverpool: £70.38; Leeds: £66.38; Leicester: £63.58, and Glasgow: £63.50. The only one of these 10 cities showing a decline was Bristol, with rates dropping by 3.16 per cent.

In Europe, Prague and Paris also charged higher prices compared to the second quarter of 2011, and Warsaw, which hosted the European Football Championships, saw rates rise significantly to £71.69 per night, an increase that mirrored that of London’s. The most expensive hotel stay in Europe, at an average of £119.88, was in
 Moscow.

New York
, the report showed, came out as the city on top with travellers paying an average of £148.57 per night per room, while at the bottom, Bangkok posted an average rate of £42.68. Also notable was the rate increase in Rio de Janeiro, which in 2014 and 2016, respectively, will host the Football World Cup and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Rates there rose by 37 per cent to £141.69, making it the second most expensive city in the world covered in the report.
