Leeds Beckett University’s position as the Association of British Conference Organisers’ (ABPCO) inaugural Centre of Excellence will boost entry into association event management, the university says.

ABPCO revealed last week that Leeds Beckett’s UK centre for Events Management was its first Centre of Excellence, with a particular emphasis on associations. The university had to provide evidence of its achievements and expertise and demonstrate a commitment to ‘the promotion of careers and research in association events of the future’.

Rhodri Thomas, professor of tourism and events policy at Leeds Beckett University said: “ABPCO benefits from the establishment of Centres of Excellence because the scheme concentrates more academic attention on association events and encourages the brightest and best students to choose careers in this sector.

“Universities benefit from the extra support and attention afforded to them by ABPCO and give them a marketing edge when promoting their courses.

“This is a key milestone, not only for the University but for the meetings and event professionals of the future.”

Leeds Beckett University was the first university centre in the UK, and among the first in the world, to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in event management. It remains the largest dedicated centre of its kind in the UK.

Nicole Leida, joint-chair of ABPCO, said: “The university is well known for its graduated students winning awards regularly and enjoying rewarding careers in the industry so it’s clearly a fantastic learning environment for young professionals. The relationship with ABPCO continues to go from strength to strength and we look forward to stepping up that partnership over the course of the next year.”
