Africa Village, the hospitality centre for the majority of African nations competing in the Olympic Games, has closed due to unpaid debts, the BBC has reported.

Situated in Kensington Gardens, West London, the village supposedly “owes suppliers hundreds of thousands of pounds,” although an exact figure is not known.

Opposite the Royal Albert Hall, the village represented the first time at an Olympic Games that the majority of all 53 African national Olympic committees had come together to host one, specially dedicated house.

With an exhibition area, restaurant and reception area, the site has received more than 80,000 visitors since it opened on 28 July, the BBC reported.

A meeting is to be arranged to establish whether the venue can open later today (Thursday) for its Tunisia Day. It was due to close on 13 August.
