BestCities Global Alliance has announced Jonas Wilstrup, convention director at Wonderful Copenhagen, will lead the alliance as new board chair.

Wilstrup replaces outgoing chair Karen Bolinger, chief executive of Melbourne Convention Bureau, it was announced ahead of IMEX Frankfurt.

The membership body of alliance of meting destinations across the globe also announced a new city member in Bogotá, which is the first city to join from South America.

Wilstrup said: "I'm very excited to take up the position. Karen Bolinger has done a huge amount and helped move our strategy along to bring our alliance to a new level. It is a great honour to continue that.

"Some of the stepping stones I see are to continue work on growing our global reach to make sure we are truly global, and to also build legacies as part of business development."

Wilstrup said future strategies included growing membership, with a continued focus on the Americas, while a partnership with the Professional Congress Management Association will provide the alliance with increased exposure and business opportunities.

It was revealed the alliance is also working on establishing a legacy strategy, to help its members attract more business.

BestCities board member and Kindology founder Michael Foreman told the press conference: "A strong destination or alliance is not only one that takes note of what clients say, but actions it.

"The majority of clients want to do more than fly in and meet, before flying out. They want to be a part of the local community; they want to raise awareness of the issues that mean a lot to them; they want to make an impact and leave a legacy."

BestCities will hold its Global Forum on 4-7 December in Dubai.
