Brussels Zaventem Airport and the city's train stations have been put on lockdown following two explosions this morning.

The airport has been evacuated and closed to flights following the incident, which is reported to have left 34 dead and many more severely injured in the Belgian capital.

A further blast has been reported at the Maelbeeck metro station, with reports of further fatalities.

Meanwhile, Eurostar has cancelled all services through Brussels Midi Station and passengers are advised to postpone all travel without incurring a charge.

Public attractions in the city, such as museums, are also said to have been closed down.

Colchester-based meetings and travel management company Inntel says it has groups in Brussels, who have been identified and accounted for via the company’s iCare delegate management system. One group of delegates from London was due to have landed in Brussels at 7.10am – before the explosions occurred.

Jane Dibble, Inntel’s director of business development, said: “Some of our clients have got people out there. Thankfully there are not too many, as it is the countdown to Easter.”

Inntel clients are able to contact delegates directly through iCare, and all the agency’s meeting attendees in the city have been accounted for.

Dibble added that many of the delegates will remain in Brussels for a further night, while others may be rebooked on to a Eurostar service back to London.

Event agency NYS Corporate has also conducted a Traveller Tracking search of all existing bookings, which has confirmed that none of its clients’ travellers are in the affected area.

Meanwhile, Croydon-based publishing company Crain Communications has cancelled the two-day Plastics Recycling Show Europe, which was scheduled to be held at the Brussels Expo from today (Tuesday).

Another event due to take place at the Brussels Expo this week, the, Storage Expo and The Tooling Event, which was due to have 150 exhibitors, has also been postponed to a date yet to be confirmed.
