Brussels was keen to show UK buyers it is "ready and eager" for groups following recent terror attacks, in a fam trip organised by hotel republic and its two Brussels partners.

The fam trip invited representatives from agencies such as Absolute Corporate Events, Inntel, Zibrant and Capita Travel & Events in a tour around the Belgium capital, in a series of activities and site visits.

Hotel republic MD Kai Schömann said revenue and bookings across Brussels venues fell by up to 40 per cent after the city's airport and subway station were targeted in March. He added: "Indeed, after the attacks business was seriously affected but now that the airport is fully operational again Brussels, the hotels and the lovely people living and working there are more than ever ready and eager to show the world that Brussels is a marvelous city and a great destination for meetings and events.

"I think we can definitely say that buyers were strongly impressed and confident about offering Brussels as a safe destination for their clients."

The group took part in a cooking class with white asparagus and visited Delvaux, the oldest fine leather luxury goods company in the world, which was founded in 1829 in Brussels. The buyers also tested Brussels Number 1 rated activity on TripAdvisor, a detective game called Escape Hunt.

The group were also taken to hotel republic's two hotels in Brussels, The Hotel and Hotel Bloom.

Zarina Mahmood, account director at hotel republic, said: "This fam trip was extremely important to us. Brussels is such a popular city with the UK market especially with such easy access via the Eurostar from London St Pancras. We wanted to show our clients that the city is open for business as usual and has some amazing restaurants and venues."
