Travel management specialist Portman has seen conference and events business surge by a third in the first quarter of 2016.

The company, which reported events-related sales of around £5 million in 2015, said Q1 results were 35 per cent up on the previous year, thanks to a clutch of new business wins from sectors including retail and manufacturing.

Portman consolidated its conference and events team in East Kilbride in 2014, and has since increased its size from eight to 12 staff.

Although the conference and events team revenue represents less than 3 per cent of Portman’s sales, it is the fastest growing part of the business said national operations manager Joanne Kirk.

She added: “Since we consolidated our team from a number of locations across the UK under one roof in East Kilbride, our momentum and results have been impressive. The sales are up by over a third for the first quarter, and ahead of budget. The business unit has surpassed all its objectives and is well placed for its best ever year in 2016. We have a great team, highly motivated and really flexible in their approach to deliver every time for our customers.  We have enjoyed a positive run of new wins and repeat business which will contribute to the growth of this business in the year ahead.”

Kirk added that Portman expects to expand the size of the conference and events team over the next two years.
