Glasgow welcomes £141 million in conferences

City records 'best ever' year in 2015-16, while securing 500 more international and UK meetings

Glasgow has reported its best year for conference wins after securing £141 million worth of business in 2015-16.

The city's convention bureau, Glasgow City Marketing (GCMB), says the wins injected £2.7m on average each week between April 2015 and March 2016.

Around 420,000 delegate days will be generated from 513 meetings which have been confirmed until 2022, the bureau says. 
The Glasgow Conference Ambassador Programme has been credited with securing half (49 per cent) of all conference business for the 12 months to March 2016, up from 30 per cent two years ago.

Major conferences include European Association of Archaeology at the University of Glasgow; the International Space Planes / Hypersonic Systems and Technologies Conference at the University of Strathclyde’s Technology Innovation Centre (TIC) as well as the European Association of International Education Convention and Diabetes UK’s annual congress, both of which were held at the SECC. These four meetings brought more than 10,000 delegates to Glasgow; boosting the local economy by more than £15 million.

Aileen Crawford, GCMB’s head of conventions, said: "Our year-end results are a clear endorsement of the confidence that the global meetings industry continues to have in Glasgow and further strengthens our reputation as one of the world’s premier business tourism destinations."

Stand-out conventions secured by GCMB include the World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2018 and the annual meeting of the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) in 2022.

Crawford added: "Glasgow is a great example of a city that understands the relevance of its knowledge hub economy. In 2015/16, nearly half of all conference business confirmed to Glasgow for future years was in our key economic sectors of life sciences, medical, energy, sustainability, low carbon industries, engineering, financial and business services – which represents 10 per cent growth on the previous year.

Kathleen Warden, director of conference sales at the SECC, added: "The continued growth in our conference sector is a reflection of the SECC’s on-going commitment to further developing its well established conference business and our partnership with the wider stakeholder community is crucial to our success."
