Up to 20 hotels in America have been plagued with cyber security breaches, including six Westin properties and the InterContinental Tampa Bay.

HEI Hotels issued a message to customers once it became aware of the breach this week, warning them to check credit card statements after malware was installed on its payment processing systems as early as 1 March 2015. Other affected properties include Le Meridien San Francisco,Dallas Fort Worth Marriott Hotel & Golf Club, Hotel Chicago Downtown and the Westin Philadelphia.

A spokesperson said the situation had been contained. "We are treating this matter as a top priority, and took steps to address and contain this incident promptly after it was discovered, including engaging outside data forensic experts to assist us in investigating and remediating the situation. In addition, we have disabled the malware and are in the process of reconfiguring various components of our network and payment systems to enhance the security of these systems. We have contacted law enforcement and will continue to cooperate with their investigation. We are also coordinating with the banks and payment card companies."
