ICC Wales has reached an important milestone in the £84 million project, with more than half the steel for the build now in place, including the framework for the 1,500-seat auditorium.

The £83.7m joint venture between Celtic Manor and Welsh Government will accommodate 5,000 delegates and includes a 4,000 sqm pillar-free main hall, a 1,500-seated auditorium, 12 flexible meeting rooms, a double-height glass atrium and a 2,500 sqm outdoor plaza.

Russell Phillips, vice president of facilities and development, ICC Wales, said: “We have seen fantastic progress on the site recently, with the building rapidly taking shape.

"We are on schedule to have the building watertight by the end of November, ready for the second fix, and on target for our completion in summer 2019.”

ICC Wales has awarded contracts worth more than £22m to businesses in South Wales for the construction of the Newport convention centre, providing a massive boost to the economy of the region, with 22 firms from across South Wales awarded contracts for various aspects of the build.

When complete, ICC Wales is expected to bring £70 million a year into the Welsh economy.
