Event industry trade show IMEX America pushed the bar higher again this week with a record number of hosted buyers, while exhibiting companies were up 5 per cent at 3,250.

More than 3,000 hosted buyers attended the show this year, alongside more than 1,000 unhosted attendees. The buyers booked more than 60,000 appointments and, for the first time, IMEX America outgrew the Frankfurt show.

Las Vegas was already a busy place with the final presidential debate in town and the accompanying media circus and increased security levels. But IMEX America also created huge after-hours activity with the additional networking events and parties that surrounded the exhibition.

For example, 800 people participated in the IMEX 5km run and the city closed the strip to traffic at dawn to allow a unique experience in Las Vegas for participants.

More than 900 people attended Smart Monday, while the Meeting Professionals International (MPI) Foundation party hosted 2,000 people and raised US$365,000 for the foundation. Site Night North America was hosted for 1,200 at the Omnia Nightclub by the Society for Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE) and a soccer match was organised between a representative IMEX team and a line-up from the hotel complex.

IMEX chairman Ray Bloom said: “We put on a good show here but I have say that it is because of the outstanding service we get from Venetia/ Palazzo.”

Chris Meyer, VP sales for the Las Vegas Convention & Visitor Authority (LVCVA), said: “It was so busy in this building this week and the engagement factor was off the park. And to have the final presidential debate at the same time as this event demonstrated the professionalism of Las Vegas as a host city for major events.

We had 620 appointments on our booth alone. This week has been a huge success for Las Vegas CVA and I am sure other exhibitors will say the same thing.
