Tony Moy, the man credited with launching incentive travel in the UK, has passed away.

The industry icon died suddenly on Monday morning aged 77, prompting a flow of tributes from colleagues and friends.

Moy's first taste of incentive travel was chartering a bus of 12 people for a weekend trip to the Monaco Grand Prix, while he was working for another company. Word spread among the automotive industry and bookings quickly rose, which led to the birth of Page & Moy Travel in 1961. This later became Page & Moy Motivation and then Page & Moy Marketing, or P&MM.

The company grew from 12 employees to 125 people by the time Moy and co-owner John Fisher, now of FMI Group, sold it in 1998. During that time, P&MM helped spawn a number of companies that would become industry heavyweights, including BI Europe, Motivcom and the former THA.

John Fisher said Moy had an unrivalled passion for breaking new ground in travel.

"We called him the trains, boats and planes man. He wanted to know everything about anything to do with travel; he had either been on it or wanted to learn about it," he said.

"He was very proud of chartering 21 consecutive Concord flights as a promotion for Radio Times magazine's consumers. It was quite an achievement and it was unusual as a consumer incentive. But Tony had the contacts to sort it out.

"He's so well known in the industry and really good to talk to. He would invariably know someone around the world who would be able to help pull off any idea he came up with.

"He was a great enthusiast and lover of all things motivational...especially red wine. It sounds a bit of a cliche to say they don't make them like Tony anymore. But in this case it's true. Thanks Tony, for everything."

Moy leaves behind two children, James and Jenny, and a granddaughter.
