The much-anticipated InterContinental London - The O2 has opened in east London.

Boasting what it claims to be among the largest pillarless ballrooms in Europe, the 3,100 sqm Arora Ballroom, the 453-bedroom hotel also includes 19 meeting rooms, an organiser’s office and 1,600 sqm of pre-function space overlooking Canary Wharf.

The hotel is at the forefront of the rise of east London as a meetings and events hub, thanks to increased facilities at the neighbouring O2 arena and ExCeL London, in addition to the spaces becoming available at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park at Stratford.

InterContinental Hotel Group’s Europe CEO Angela Brav said: “We are enormously proud to welcome InterContinental London – The O2 to the InterContinental brand family. Our guests love our hotels for their outstanding restaurants, incredible locations and cosmopolitan design, all of which are perfectly encapsulated in this hotel. This opening continues the strong momentum we have behind the InterContinental brand, having recently opened InterContinental Estoril and InterContinental Bordeaux - Le Grand Hotel.”

Previously, central London’s largest central pillar-free ballroom was at Marriott’s Grosvenor House, where the Great Room can seat up to 2,000 guests.

Last year InterContinental London - The O2 commercial director Raj Shah said: “Globally, clients are starting to realise that east London is becoming a major centrepiece for London, even if it is not in central London.

"The main resistance that we face is from those event planners who have done central London for years and years because it is easy. The notion that everything has to be in the West End is no longer valid.”
