Large-scale events are being postponed the build up to next month’s referendum on the UK’s membership of the EU.

Figures released by wefindvenues, the venue finding tool that launched a joint-venture with agency AOK Events this month, indicate a fall in the number of high expense events being booked through its online platform as companies put decisions on hold until the outcome of the 23 June poll is known.

While average lead times have risen, from 95 to 108 days, wefindvenues has noted a 12 per cent decline in average booking value, to £5,350.

Director Paul Moynihan said: “While talking to a considerable number of clients (around 50) who have previously made large enquiries (£20k+) at this time of year, many are suggesting that decisions on holding bigger events are being postponed until we know whether or not the UK will choose to Brexit.

"The impression I got was that most of them are waiting to find out whether we stay in to give their events the go ahead, and that if the UK votes leave they will continue to wait and see what happens with the economy.

There’s little doubt on both sides of the debate that if the UK does decide to leave the EU, we are in for a rocky few years at least.”

Moynihan added that developments such as the link up with AOK Events and investment in a marketing campaign has seen enquiries increase by more than 200 per cent in year-on-year figures.
