Malta has unveiled its new convention bureau, Conventions Malta, as the Mediterranean island positions itself as a serious business destination.

Malta Tourist Board (MTA) CEO Paul Bugeja said the bureau would continue driving business from its key markets in the UK, Germany and Italy, while also targeting softer markets like France, Poland and Turkey.

Plans to establish a convention bureau were first announced in May 2015, and the bureau will be focused on attracting business events during the off-peak season, from November to March.

Conventions Malta's strategy covers four areas; research and planning, product development, marketing and promotion and quality assurance.

Bugeja said: "The establishment of Conventions is in line with the government's vision of repositioning Malta as not just a Mediterranean destination, but a destination for business.

"This is the way forward and this is the first step."

Malta welcomed 128,000 business tourists last year, while overall tourist numbers rose 15 per cent from 2014 to 2015. The UK generated the second highest share of business travellers (15.5 per cent) after Italy (24.5 per cent).
