OBITUARY

03/05/2005

I am sad to announce that after a brave and determined battle against illness, Keith Wrighton, World Event Management’s founding chairman, died on Thursday 28th April 2005. In many ways, how he faced the last two years is how he led his life: focused, cheerful, ever optimistic and always thinking of other people before himself.
Keith had always worked in the travel, meetings and incentive industry and after moving to Yorkshire he started his own company World Meetings in 1986.
The company quickly gained a reputation for providing professional travel and logistics management around the world, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. His knowledge of venues, restaurants and DMCs was encyclopaedic and he never forgot a name. Right up until the last few days he was still suggesting possible destinations, recalling contacts and recommending restaurants that would suit particular client programmes.
As a result Keith made many friends within the industry. It was a joke within the company that Keith would always meet someone he knew in an airport and come back with another lead to follow up. Nobody ever had a bad word to say about him. His honest, plain-speaking approach gained him the loyalty of his staff, the respect of his clients and the reputation of being an industry leader who was to be trusted. Indeed we still have staff and work with clients, hoteliers and partners who have worked with Keith since he opened for business twenty years ago. There can be no better testimony to the high regard in which he was held.
Keith and I first met whilst pitching for the same client. We were both determined to succeed but realised that together we would be stronger. We brought our businesses together to form World Event Management and for the last 8 years I have been proud to be his business partner. I will miss his practical no-nonsense approach, his support and willingness to try some of my more off-the-wall ideas and his reassuring grasp of all business matters that brought both integrity and profitability. He was without doubt one of the good guys.
Keith was a devoted family man and throughout his career and his illness he has been supported by his wife Jan and their two sons James and Christopher. All past and present staff at World Event Management will miss him greatly and send their deepest condolences to his family.
