Saint Petersburg hotel occupancy rises 9 per cent in 2015

Convention bureau celebrates record year, with visitor numbers at record levels

Saint Petersburg Convention Bureau has marked a record year after securing two major European conferences. 

The bureau, established in 2014, welcomed 900,000 business travellers to the Russian city as part of a total 6.5 million tourists in 2015, up from 6.3 million in 2014. They came for 160 exhibitions and 70 national and international congresses, helping increase hotel occupancy to 75 per cent (up from 66 per cent in 2014).

The bureau also secured the Seminar of the European Society of Contraception and the Seminar of European Association of History Educators, both to be held in 2017.

A spokesperson for bureau said: "The bureau targets events that cover the most developed economy industries and have a strong local professional communities. These include culture, ship- and machine building, IT, heavy machinery and transport, pharmaceuticals and medicine, and food, which are all key industries in Saint Petersburg."

The city is also set to benefit from the opening of two Hilton hotels, the Hilton Saint Petersburg Expoforum and Hampton by Hilton Saint Petersburg Expoforum, adding a combined 451 rooms, while the Lotte Group will open another 100 rooms with a property in 2017.
