The Bulb launches to shine a light on sustainability

A pair of event professionals are on a mission to shake up the industry with the launch of a new sustainable events agency.

Selina Donald and Ruth Weldon are launching The Bulb, which aims to produce creative and forward-thinking events with minimal impact on the environment.

Donald said: “Our passion for sustainability has been born out of a response to the changes we have seen in the world around us. We’re keen to use our past experience and create fantastic events for our clients while at the same time, adding an extra advantage of having minimal environmental impact. 

It’s incredibly important to start looking at the way we deliver events today and how we can produce these responsibly, to make a better tomorrow.” 

Weldon added: “We’re excited to work with like-minded clients and suppliers who want to collaborate to create unforgettable experiences, but with minimal cost to the environment.

“Working sustainably means we are creative in our ideas as well as our budgets and this can only bring benefits to everyone involved.”

Weldon and Donald worked for ITV Events for the last two years as senior project manager and project manager respectively, which is where they came up with the idea for The Bulb.

Donald was one of the intake for the first Fast Forward 15 scheme and has been mentored by Fay Sharpe for the last year, while she also worked on the sustainability committee for the London 2012 opening and closing ceremonies.

She said: “The Olympics was absolutely brilliant, the most incredible experience. That’s where my passion and interest in sustainability was sparked.

“We are taking the risk to leave the safe environment of a large corporate to set up on our own, to pursue our passion for responsible working and the environment, one event at a time. We know we are David taking on Goliath but we're ready for the challenge.

“It’s really daunting, it’s a huge risk and a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. However, it’s also really exciting and the passion we’ve got to do something on our own counterbalances that.

She added that her experience as part of Fast Forward 15 had helped give her the confidence to launch The Bulb.

“Fay Sharpe has been absolutely brilliant, providing advice to get us off the ground and as someone to bounce ideas off. We always knew what we wanted to do, but Fast Forward 15 definitely helped in pushing us forward. I would highly recommend it.” 

The Bulb, based in East London, is launching in February with an official launch event in March.
