The Kia Oval has predicted meetings and events revenues will hit £4.5 million this year, equivalent to 15 per cent of all turnover at the venue.

Flexible event spaces at the home of Surrey County Cricket Club have helped create a four-fold increase in turnover since 2011, says commercial director Charlie Hodgson, while the conference and meetings sales team has grown to eight.

Hodgson said: “We started this phase of growth in 2011, and it has been focused on delivery of a really good product at a good price. We are very flexible and get a lot of repeat and government business.”

More than 8,000 delegates have attended events at the cricket stadium, also host to England Test matches, so far this year, with corporate clients including Google, Apple, Coca-Cola and John Lewis. Hodgson points to an extended variety of event spaces as part of its success.

Part of the concourse under the OCS Stand has been converted into non-matchday event space, the 600-capacity Jardine Suite, which has proved popular in combination with the Corinthian Roof Terrace, situated on the roof of the stand. Hodgson added: “Conferences and events becomes even more important in non-Ashes tour years; we have some days when every room in the ground is full.”

New developments at the Oval include the Peter May stand, which is due to have a rooftop terrace available for use on matchdays.
