The Scottish Hydro announces 2013 opening date

30/07/2012

The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) has announced that its extension, The Hydro, is set to open for business on 2 September 2013.

The Hydro’s project team, led by construction company Lend Lease and architects, Foster + Partners, started work on the 12,000-capacity arena in Glasgow in February 2011.

John Sharkey, CEO of SECC, said: “The progress that has been made with The Hydro has been outstanding. The entire project team including staff at the SECC should be congratulated for their efforts involved in the process of taking The Hydro on its journey to completion and ready for business. The construction team, our own staff and The Hydro team have all been playing their part in getting the building ready to allow us to deliver a fantastic opening night.

“The relationship with our naming rights sponsors, SSE (Scottish Hydro) is superb and this association has been invaluable in helping us create awareness to the wider public. Additional official partnerships with leading brands are also in the process of being confirmed."

Discussions are also taking place with a number of major artists who will be part of the opening programme at the venue.
