The Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) says it is hitting targets following its phase one opening in October, after securing more than 40 exhibitions and 12 national conferences for 2017.

The convention centre says it hasn't noticed an impact from the weakened oil prices, adding it will have held 30 events by the end of 2016, and says its calendar is getting "busier by the day".

The first phase of OCEC opened on 10 October this year, with the entire centre to be operational by December 2017. Major wins include the World Congress of the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery (SICOT) in 2019 which will bring over 3,000 delegates.

Trevor McCartney, OCEC general manager, told M&IT the centre was performing well and there had been no noticeable impact from weak oil prices.

"Everyone seems very interested in Oman as it is  quite a unique, authentic and different destination especially due to its natural values, diversity and cultural heritage," he said.

"When the convention centre opens the end of 2017 we will be able to welcome more regional and international conferences that can attract over 3000 delegates."
