Gothenburg will host the 2019 Associations World Congress (AWC).

The city becomes the first in Scandinavia to host the event, which typically attracts around 200 executives from international associations for a mixture of peer-to-peer learning and networking.

The announcement marks the end of a three-year bidding process by Gothenburg & Co Convention Bureau, the Swedish Exhibition and Congress Centre, and local organiser MCI Nordics.

It underlines Gothenburg’s ambition to become an important conference destination, competing more aggressively with other European cities for lucrative international association meetings.

Per Ankaer, director of sales at MCI Nordics, said: “ For three years we have out in a lot of effort to convince the organisers (to come to Gothenburg). Now we are very pleased that the Associations World Congress will be arranged in the very heart of Scadinavia.”

Damian Hutt, executive director of AWC organisers the Association of Association Executives, said: “We have rotated the meeting around Europe, but never before in Scandinavia, so it was important that we put that right. We are hoping to attract more national associations for the event, who will have their own dedicated stream, because we believe there is actually a lot of content overlap with national and international associations, so it didn’t make sense not to invite them along.”
