The world’s biggest gathering of cardiologists, held in Barcelona just a week after a terrorist attack in the city centre left 14 dead, has been hailed a ‘complete success’ by organisers.

In a show of solidarity for the host city, more than 31,700 healthcare professionals, from a record 153 countries, met at Fira Gran Via for the annual ESC Congress, to share knowledge.

ESC President, Prof Jeroen Bax, said one of the aims of the congress was to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of all deaths, which in most cases was preventable.

“That’s why the ESC included a public health event in downtown Barcelona, just a week after the terrible attacks in the city. These acts, meant to terrorise and disrupt, only succeed if we allow them to succeed. ESC Congress was determined to proceed as planned and it was a complete success.”

Prof. Stephan Achenbach, chair of the Congress Programme Committee, said: “This has been one of the most exciting and comprehensive scientific programmes yet. Major studies were presented reflecting the excellent scientific content submitted to our congress. Some of them will effectively change practise and move cardiology to new directions.”

ESC Congress is the summit of cardiovascular medicine. It is seen by healthcare professionals the world over as the place to be for the latest developments in cardiology and its unique networking opportunities with renowned experts from every subspecialty in the field.

Christoph Tessmar, director of Barcelona Convention Bureau, said: “The event went very smoothly, absolutely as planned, and, in fact, we attracted 2,000 more people than in 2014, when we last hosted ESC. It was a great achievement for all concerned, given the circumstances, and it was fantastic how ESC backed the city after the terrorist attack in La Ramba.”
