The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) has welcomed a record number of delegates to its 56th annual congress, which is being held in Prague this week.

Almost 1,300 members - including more than 40 association executives - have arrived in the Czech capital for four days of education, chapter meetings and networking.

ICCA president Nina Freysen Pretorius said: “It seems that this year is a record year for our conference in many respects. We have a record number of attendees, the largest group of association executives attending, and aim to deliver the strongest educational programme to date.”

ICCA has positioned itself as a knowledge hub for associations and executives from a wide range of not-for-profit organisations have travelled to Prague for the conference whose theme is 'Bridge to Inspiration'.

ICCA chief executive Martin Sirk said: “We have been working very hard to get them here, so we are delighted so many association executives have made the journey. They are here in various capacities, panellists, speakers, and we are going to announce the winners of our Incredible Impact Grant programme, which we launched earlier this year at IMEX.”

However the event has been tinged with sadness, with delegates absorbing the news of two industry deaths: Paul Flackett, former managing director of trade show IMEX, who passed away after a long illness, and Manisa Mohamed Nor, from Malaysia Convention and Exhibition Bureau, (MYCEB) who died on the flight to Prague.

About Flackett, Ray Bloom, chairman IMEX Group, said: “Paul has been by my side as a friend and in business for over 30 years and was an inspiration to us all in how he conducted himself throughout his career, in particular the humour he brought to us all. I know that he will be greatly missed by all who knew him and our thoughts are with his friends and family.”

During ICCA's General Assembly the destination for the ICCA 2020 was revealed as Kaohsiung, in Chinese Taipei.
