A record 500 delegates are expected at the event now in its eleventh year

Hundreds of knowledge-hungry association executives were arriving in the Belgian port city of Antwerp today (Monday) for the 11th edition of Associations World Congress (AWC).

Organiser Damian Hutt, executive director of the Association of Association Executives (AAE), said he expected almost 500 delegates at the two-day meeting, including sponsors.

That would be a record attendance for the event, which typically attracts around 300 delegates. Antwerp’s proximity to association hub Brussels could be the decisive factor.

The congress is taking place at the newly-expanded Flanders Meeting and Convention Center Antwerp, which claims to be the only meetings venue in the world located inside a zoo.

Proceedings were kicking off today with pre-congress invitation-only meetings for association leaders, medical association executives, and leaders of societies of associations.

Tomorrow the programme proper starts with keynote speeches on the topics of legacy and diversity before delegates have a choice of three tracks on governance, tech, and member engagement.

The day will be capped by a gala awards dinner at the Grand Café Horta Art Nouveau Hall.

Another full day of education and networking will follow on Wednesday.
