M&IT have created an online training webinar which focuses on the legal rights of event organisers and what to look for when negotiating venue contracts. With return on investment being increasingly monitored in events, are you up-to-date with the latest legislation and what your rights are? The course covers many questions including:

Are you aware of the legal rights of event organisers when negotiating venue contracts?
Are venues legally entitled to charge 100% on cancellation?
What if the space is re-sold?
How do you insure against weather disruption or force majeure?
Are you up-to-date with The Bribery Act: Agents commission?
How does the new Allergens EU regulation affect venues and buyers?

You will find out what to look for in the terms and conditions - focusing in on the paragraphs that matter. It's also about agreeing standard terms and conditions for a range of events, rather than having to reinvent the wheel with a new set. Also, how do you address the stringent demands of venues in respect of minimum numbers where you have limited control over whether delegates accept or not.

* The Bribery Act: Agents commission. What is the percentage acceptance level of agents commission, what happens when a venue pays more than that to an agent? Does that have the potential to be regarded as a bribe? How does this affect venue contracts and should buyers be ensuring their own compliance with the law by ensuring venues don’t compromise their position/internal bribery policies?

* Allergens – With new EU regulation Food Information for Consumers Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011, what does this mean for venues and buyers. How will venues ensure that they provide appropriate catering and information and who will be responsible if a delegate fails to advise the buyer and/or the venue of their needs. Should this be something to build into your contracting processes?

These questions and many others will be answered on this online training session featuring Nick Milne, Conference Manager at Robinson College Cambridge.

Speaker biographies:

Nick Milne has been involved with the conference industry as an operator and as an innovator, for most of his working life. Having followed a 35 year career path through operational and general management posts, he specialised in conference hotels in particular and claims to have “grown with the industry”. His hotel path has taken him through Crest and Thistle Hotels and the independent Down Hall Country House Hotel and he now heads up the commercial activity at Robinson College, Cambridge.

Amongst other extra-curricular activity, he is involved in shaping the Cambridge University conference offering and farther afield has been a member of the Training Academy Committee for the Hotel Booking Agents Association. Nick is an active proponent of the Meetings Industry Association, initially as a Regional Chair and more recently as Chairman of the Board and currently as Hon. Secretary. In his Board capacities, he has championed the quality that venues should offer their clients and was one of the original design brains behind the Accredited in Meetings (AIM) scheme. The open nature of relations with clients is a mainstay for him so it is unsurprising that his knowledge and drive towards carefully constructed contracts of business are close to his heart.
