Lib Dems to meet in NewcastleGateshead for first time

27/09/2011

Following the autumn conference in Birmingham last week, the Liberal Democrats are now planning for the spring conference which will be held at The Sage Gateshead for the first time.

Exhibiting at the conference at the ICC last week, NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau met with delegates and took almost £23k worth of hotel bookings for the conference in March.

Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, said: “I am really pleased that the Liberal Democrats will be visiting NewcastleGateshead for our Spring Conference in 2012. The world-class facilities of The Sage Gateshead, top-quality hotels and the famous friendliness of the local people are obvious attractions to coming to North East England.”

The event is expected to attract around 1,500 politicians, decision makers and policy influencers to North East England and generate more than £1m to the local economy. In attracting the Liberal Democrats, NewcastleGateshead will have hosted all three of the major political parties in England after hosting the Labour Party in 2005 and Conservatives in 2008.

Jessica Roberts, head of business tourism at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau said: “To achieve a political party hat-trick is something we’re very proud of and has really reinforced the strength of NewcastleGateshead as one of England’s leading conference cities.”
