MPI's mission to prove the meetings industry is green

04/05/2012

Meeting Professionals International (MPI) has published a report detailing the performance of its 2011 World Education Congress (WEC) in Orlando measured against new CSR reporting standards, which it helped to develop.

MPI was a participant in the development of the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) Event Organizer Sector Supplement (EOSS) criteria, which will be adopted by the world’s largest events.

The WEC 2011
report looks at what the reporting initiative entails to assist MPI members with implementation for their own meetings and events, whatever their size.

Roger Simons, CSR manager, MPI, said: “The meetings industry now has an opportunity to demonstrate its maturity in CSR and articulate how events not only deliver ROI for organisations but enhance economic, social and environmental progress in the communities where we hold events around the world. MPI is committed to providing members with practical examples of sustainability in practice for our industry.”

In addition to general issues such as greenhouse gas emissions and waste, the new framework helps event organisers report on more specific issues including attendee travel, legacy of the event, and sustainability initiatives employed for the event.

MPI is supporting the launch of the GRI EOSS with two webinars for members taking place on 15 and 30 May. The WEC 2011 report can be downloaded at:
