Organisers of AIBTM, the Americas Meetings & Events Exhibition, are pulling the event out of Baltimore from next year - despite increasing hosted buyer applications by a more than a third.
Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) said it would rotate the three-day show between Chicago and Orlando to ‘maximise’ its potential. Chicago will host the 11-13 June 2013 event at McCormick Place, while Orlando will host the 10-12 June 2014 event at the Orange County Convention Center.
The show reported lower than expected figures when it debuted in 2011, but earlier this year organisers said the number of hosted buyer applications for 2012 had risen by 36 per cent.
The 2012 event starts at the Baltimore Convention Centre tomorrow, running from 19-21 June. It will feature a new mobile app that officials hope will "help attendees get the most out of their experience”.
RTE said the new rotation would offer stakeholders access to new business opportunities in two gateway cities that are themselves major meeting industry hubs. The overall content of the shows would not change.
Craig Moyes, portfolio director of the IBTM Global Events Portfolio for Reed Travel Exhibitions, said: "Following the lead of many associations in the US that move their events to a different place each year, we will now have the flexibility to maximise the enormous potential delivered to AIBTM by both Chicago and Orlando."
Last year's event attracted more than 2,600 visitors, including approximately 740 hosted buyers, but AIBTM had been hoping for 2,000 hosted buyers.
